Can AI Help Contributors Differentiate Between Personal and Universal Values?

Status: First Draft Published for comment

It is likely that some contributors will confuse their personal goals, intrinsic values, social values and universal values. I wanted to test how an automated AI might respond is asked to assist in categorising values… Do we need to guide and educate the newbie in terms of these categories (no answer is ‘wrong’ – we need to capture, respect and work with everyone… But do we need living mediator intervention or can AI help with categorisation, taxonomy etc… If AI can help – How would that feel?

I asked ChatGPT the following question:

This is the answer that Chat GPT gave:-

Proposed human value “I want to own a big fast car”

The AI response was :-

Owning a big fast car reflects a personal value, which could be linked to things like freedom, status, or enjoyment of life. To express this personal value as a more universal value, we need to identify the broader underlying motivation that might resonate with many people.

Here’s how we might frame it:

  1. Personal Value: “I want to own a big fast car because it gives me a sense of freedom and excitement.”
  2. Universal Value: “The desire for freedom, self-expression, and enjoyment in life is important to everyone.”

This transforms the specific wish for a fast car into something that aligns with universal human desires for freedom, individuality, and pleasure—concepts most people can relate to, even if they don’t all share the same desire for a car.

Would this reframe capture the underlying sentiment behind your personal value?
